Yes, solar panels are one of the many products that will take a hit in 2025, with prices rising 25%, but not everything is bad news! Follow along as we break down the impacts of proposed tariffs. ### **Solar Tariffs Explained** ###### **What are Tariffs?** A tariff is a tax that a government imposes on imported or exported goods or services. The purpose of tariffs is to: - **Protect domestic industries:** Tariffs make foreign goods more expensive, which encourages consumers to buy local products instead. - **Generate revenue:** Tariffs are a source of income for the government. - **Advance foreign policy:** Tariffs can be used as a negotiating tool in trade negotiations ###### **Why is the Solar Industry Affected?** The solar industry is ever-changing, and so are policies. The idea of new tariffs on China has been floating around for quite some time, and that time has arrived. Earlier in December, the current Biden administration issued an official announcement regarding tariffs on China, specifically solar parts, that could increase prices between 25%-50%. Additionally, President-elect Donald Trump said China can expect "an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs" until the country cracks down on illegal fentanyl smuggling. In other words, 2025 will start off with higher prices on solar panels, parts, and accessories. Any new panels coming in starting in the new year will include higher costs which will then be reflected on the retail price for consumers. ###### **What is SanTan Solar Doing About it?** Our mission at SanTan Solar is to help everyone transition to solar energy by providing solar products for any budget.
