Microinverter Vs. Central String Inverter
There are two main grid-tied kits available – one that uses a central string inverter, and one that uses microinverters.A central inverter brings in the DC power from each solar panel and converts it to AC power in one place. With microinverters, there is a “micro” inverter with each panel that converts the DC power to AC at the panel level.
There are a few benefits of using microinverters – since the inverter is at the panel level, it allows for the panels to operate independently. This prevents loss due to shading on a panel, or due to an underperforming panel.
In a central inverter setup, those situations would affect the output of all the solar panels in the string. In order to eliminate that potential loss, power optimizers are used in conjunction with most string inverters. Like microinverters, these are connected to each panel and allow them to operate independently.
Microinverters can have a higher upfront cost vs. the central inverter kit, but in the long run, they can offer more production and more peace of mind. If there’s an issue with a particular microinverter, the others will continue to provide power to your home from your solar array. If the central inverter encounters a problem, then you won’t be able to get power from your solar array.
