Programing Charge Controllers
What is a Solar Charge Controller?:
Solar charge controllers are electronic devices that are used to regulate the charge of a battery from a solar panel. They ensure that the battery is not overcharged or discharged excessively, which can damage the battery and shorten its lifespan.
There are a few steps you can follow to program a solar charge controller:
- First, you need to determine the type of charge controller you have. Most solar charge controllers are either pulse width modulation (PWM) or maximum power point tracking (MPPT). MPPT controllers are more efficient and can handle higher voltage inputs. SanTan Solar offers MPPT charge controllers from Victron, EPever, PowMr, Fangsuson, Perfect Suitor, Growatt, and MPP Solar.
- Next, you will need to set the battery type. Solar charge controllers have settings for different types of batteries, such as Sealed lead-acid, AGM, Flooded, and Lithium. You will need to select the appropriate battery type to ensure that the controller is charging the battery correctly. Whenprogramming battery settings manually or the “User” setting, refer to your battery manufacturer's specifications for correct parameters.
- You may also need to set the charging voltage. The charging voltage is the voltage at which the battery should be charged. Low and High Voltage Disconnect are settings to keep your batteries from getting damaged from discharging to low or from overcharging, keep in mind Charge Restriction settings may not be adjustable on all devices and may be pre-set.
- Some solar charge controllers like the MPP Solar, EPever, and Victron brands are programmable via Bluetooth / Wi-Fi or additional remote displays.
Once you have programmed all the necessary settings, you should test the solar charge controller to make sure it is working correctly. You can do this by connecting a battery and a solar panel to the controller and observing the charging behavior. If everything is working properly, the controller should regulate the charge of the battery as expected.
